However, the believers prayed, and the pressure only made them bolder.

Now a different kind of danger appears. This one comes from inside. The story of Ananias and Sapphira records the first recorded sin in the church and remains one of the most sobering passages in the New Testament.

Luke could have left it out. After all, it does not flatter the early believers. Nevertheless, he includes it because his readers needed it.

For example, they needed to know that the church is not a gathering of flawless people.

In addition, they needed to understand that God takes the purity of His church seriously.

And finally, they needed a warning. Persecution can harm the church from without. Hypocrisy, however, can rot it from within.

Therefore, the account of Ananias and Sapphira serves as a guardrail at this point in Acts. It teaches every generation that God sees the heart behind the gift.

Acts 5:1-11 NASB
But a man named Ananias, with his wife Sapphira, sold a piece of property, and kept back some of the proceeds for himself, with his wife’s full knowledge, and bringing a portion of it, he laid it at the apostles’ feet. But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and to keep back some of the proceeds of the land? While it remained unsold, did it not remain your own? And after it was sold, was it not under your control? Why is it that you have conceived this deed in your heart? You have not lied to men, but to God.” And as he heard these words, Ananias collapsed and died; and great fear came over all who heard about it. The young men got up and covered him up, and after carrying him out, they buried him. Now an interval of about three hours elapsed, and his wife came in, not knowing what had happened. And Peter responded to her, “Tell me whether you sold the land for this price?” And she said, “Yes, for that price.” Then Peter said to her, “Why is it that you have agreed together to put the Spirit of the Lord to the test? Behold, the feet of those who have buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out as well.” And immediately she collapsed at his feet and died; and the young men came in and found her dead, and they carried her out and buried her beside her husband. And great fear came over the whole church, and over all who heard about these things.

Key Focus of the Passage and Jesus’ Character

The focus is the seriousness of hypocrisy, the holiness of God, the deity of the Holy Spirit, and the fear of the Lord in His church.

This passage shows a side of the Lord’s character that we may prefer to overlook. Nevertheless, it is the same Lord. Accordingly, the passage reveals Him as:

the One who knows every heart,

the Holy Lord who dwells among His people by His Spirit,

the Truth, who will not build His church on deception,

the Protector of His flock from corruption within,

and the Judge before whom every person will give account.

The People in the Interaction

Ananias

Sapphira, his wife

Peter

The young men who carry out the burials

The whole church, on whom great fear falls

What Happened in the Scene

A man named Ananias and his wife Sapphira sell a piece of property.

However, they keep back part of the price for themselves, and both of them know it. Then Ananias brings the remainder and lays it at the apostles’ feet, as though it were the whole amount.

Peter confronts him. He asks why Satan has filled his heart to lie to the Holy Spirit. The land belonged to Ananias before the sale, and the money remained under his control afterward. So why did he plan this deception? Then Peter says:

“You have not lied to men, but to God.”

When Ananias hears these words, he falls down and dies. Great fear seizes everyone who hears of it. Meanwhile, the young men wrap the body, carry it out, and bury it.

About three hours later, Sapphira comes in, unaware of what has happened. Peter asks her whether they sold the land for the stated price. She confirms the lie. Peter then asks why the two of them agreed to test the Spirit of the Lord, and he tells her that the men who buried her husband stand at the door.

Immediately, she falls at his feet and dies. The young men bury her beside her husband, and great fear comes over the whole church.

“But”: The Contrast With Barnabas

Luke opens the passage with a small word that carries great weight. “But.”

That word ties this story to the one before it. In the previous post, we met Barnabas. He sold a field, brought the money, and laid it at the apostles’ feet. His gift expressed a heart that grace had changed.

Now another couple performs the same outward act. They also sell property. They also bring money. They even lay it in the same place.

From the outside, the two gifts look identical. However, God does not judge from the outside. Barnabas gave honestly, while Ananias and Sapphira gave deceitfully.

Therefore, Luke places the two accounts side by side on purpose. He wants us to see that the same action can come from opposite hearts.

What Did Ananias and Sapphira Do Wrong?

We must identify the sin correctly, because many readers misunderstand it.

Ananias and Sapphira did not sin by keeping part of the money. Peter makes this unmistakably clear. Before the sale, the land belonged to them. After the sale, the proceeds remained under their control. In other words, no one required them to sell, and no one required them to give everything.

They could have brought half and said so. They could have brought nothing. Either choice would have been entirely acceptable.

Instead, they brought a part and presented it as the whole. Their sin was the lie.

This matters for how we read the passage. God did not judge a couple for giving too little. Rather, He judged them for pretending. They wanted the church to believe something about them that was not true.

The Reputation Without the Cost

Why would they do such a thing?

Luke does not state their motive directly. Nevertheless, the context suggests it. Barnabas had just given generously, and the church surely honored him for it. Ananias and Sapphira apparently wanted the same esteem. However, they did not want to pay the same price.

So they tried to purchase a reputation at a discount. They wanted to appear fully surrendered while holding something back.

This is the essence of hypocrisy. The word originally described an actor who wore a mask on stage. A hypocrite plays a part. He displays a devotion he does not possess.

Jesus reserved His sharpest words for this sin. He was gentle with tax collectors and with a woman caught in adultery. Yet He warned again and again against those who practice their righteousness in order to be seen.

The temptation has not disappeared. We may never lie about a land sale. However, we can easily present ourselves as more prayerful, more generous, or more spiritual than we are.

“Why Has Satan Filled Your Heart?”

Peter traces the deception to its source. He asks why Satan has filled Ananias’s heart.

The wording is striking. Throughout these chapters, Luke has told us that believers were filled with the Holy Spirit. Here, by contrast, a man’s heart is filled by the enemy.

This reveals a change of tactics. Satan first attacked the church through the council, and the attack failed. Therefore, he now attempts to corrupt it from inside. Persecution could not stop the church, so he tries hypocrisy.

However, Peter does not excuse Ananias. In the same breath, he asks why Ananias conceived this deed in his own heart. The enemy tempted, yet the man chose. Scripture consistently holds both truths together.

The church must stay alert on both fronts. Open hostility is easier to recognize. Quiet compromise among the members does far more damage.

You Have Lied to God

Peter then states what Ananias has actually done.

First, he says that Ananias has lied to the Holy Spirit. A moment later, he says that Ananias has lied to God.

Those two statements, placed together, teach an important truth. To lie to the Holy Spirit is to lie to God. Therefore, the Holy Spirit is God. Moreover, a person cannot lie to a force or an influence. Someone can only lie to a person. So this passage quietly affirms both the deity and the personhood of the Spirit.

Peter’s words also teach us how to think about sin in the church. Ananias believed he was deceiving a group of people. He imagined that only human beings were present. However, the Spirit of God dwelt in that community.

We often make the same mistake. We treat our dealings with fellow believers as merely human affairs. Yet whatever we do toward the church, we do before the One who lives in it.

Sapphira’s Opportunity

About three hours pass, and Sapphira arrives. She does not know what has happened to her husband.

Notice how Peter handles the moment. He does not accuse her at once. Instead, he asks a question. Did they sell the land for this price?

The question gave her a door. She could have told the truth. Had she done so, the story would have ended very differently. However, she repeated the lie.

This detail shows that God held each of them individually responsible. Sapphira did not die for her husband’s sin. Luke tells us at the beginning that she had full knowledge of the plan. Then, given the chance to break from it, she confirmed it.

It also shows us God’s kindness, even in a scene of judgment. Before the consequence fell, He provided an opening for honesty. He still does. Whenever conscience prompts us to come clean, He is holding that door open.

Why Was the Judgment So Severe?

Many readers find this passage troubling. The penalty seems disproportionate to the offense. Several observations help.

First, God acted this way at other great beginnings. When Israel first worshiped at the tabernacle, Nadab and Abihu offered unauthorized fire and died. When Israel first entered the land, Achan secretly kept what belonged to God, and he perished. In fact, Luke describes Ananias with the same word the Greek Old Testament uses for Achan. At the start of each new era, God made His holiness unmistakable.

Second, the stakes were high. The church was young, and its witness depended on its integrity. Had deception taken root at the foundation, it would have spread through the whole structure.

Third, we should not ask why God judged this couple. Rather, we should ask why He so often withholds judgment from the rest of us. Every lie deserves His displeasure. His usual patience is mercy.

Finally, we should avoid saying more than the text says. Luke does not tell us the eternal condition of Ananias and Sapphira. He simply records what happened and leaves the rest to God.

Great Fear Came Over the Whole Church

Luke reports the effect twice. Great fear came upon all who heard.

In the second instance, he uses a word for the first time in Acts. He calls the believers “the church.” It is fitting that the term appears here. The gathered people of God learn who they are in the presence of His holiness.

This fear was not terror that drove people away from God. Instead, it was reverence. The believers understood afresh that the living God dwelt among them and that He could not be deceived.

Such fear is healthy. Scripture calls the fear of the Lord the beginning of wisdom. A church that has lost it grows careless. By contrast, a church that knows God is holy will handle His name, His people, and His truth with care.

Grace and reverence belong together. The same chapter that showed us abundant grace now shows us great fear, and the church needs both.

The Wisdom of Jesus in the Formation of the Church

In this series, we keep asking what each passage reveals about the wisdom of Jesus in forming His church. The account of Ananias and Sapphira shows how carefully He guards it.

He protects the church from within as well as from without. Persecution did not threaten the church as deeply as pretense did.

He establishes truthfulness at the foundation. As a result, the church learns early that it cannot grow on appearances.

He keeps giving voluntarily. Because no one had to give, no one had any reason to lie.

He exposes sin in order to preserve His people. A hidden infection spreads, so He brings it into the light.

He teaches reverence alongside joy. Consequently, the church knows both His grace and His holiness.

He holds each person accountable. Husband and wife answer separately for what each one chose.

The Lesson for Us in 2026

1. God Sees the Heart Behind the Gift

Two offerings can look the same and mean opposite things. Therefore, we should examine our motives.

2. Stop Managing Your Image

We do not need to appear more spiritual than we are. Instead, we can be honest about where we stand.

3. Give Freely or Not at All

God never asked Ananias for the full amount. He only asked for the truth.

4. Take the Open Door

When God gives an opportunity to confess, we should walk through it at once.

5. Remember Whose Church It Is

The Holy Spirit dwells among His people. Consequently, how we treat the church matters to God.

6. Recover the Fear of the Lord

Reverence does not compete with grace. Rather, it keeps grace from becoming cheap.

Final Reflection

This passage unsettles us, and it should.

We would like to file it away as an unusual event from long ago. However, Luke placed it in the middle of the church’s happiest season for a reason. He wants every reader to stop and consider it.

The Mask We All Reach For

Ananias and Sapphira did not hate God. As far as we can tell, they wanted to belong to His people. They even gave a real gift.

Their failure lay elsewhere. They cared more about how they looked than about who they were.

That temptation follows every believer. We know what a devoted Christian is supposed to look like, and we learn to produce the appearance. We say the right words in a prayer meeting. We nod at the right moments. We let others assume a depth we have not actually reached.

Most of the time, no one notices. Therefore, the habit grows.

However, pretending carries a hidden cost. A mask keeps other people from knowing us. Worse, it keeps us from receiving help. No one can pray for a struggle we refuse to admit. Moreover, the longer we act a part, the less we remember what lies underneath.

The Freedom of the Truth

Now consider what Ananias could have said.

He could have walked in and said, “We sold our land, and here is part of the money. We are keeping the rest.” No one would have rebuked him. Peter himself said the money was his to use.

In other words, the truth would have cost him nothing except a little admiration.

This is the good news hidden in a hard passage. God does not demand that we impress Him. He already knows exactly what we are. Jesus died for the people we really are, not for the people we pretend to be.

Therefore, we can afford to be honest. We can admit weak faith, mixed motives, and small beginnings. The church is meant to be the one place on earth where we do not need a mask, because grace has already covered the truth about us.

The God Who Dwells Among Us

Finally, let the fear in this passage do its proper work.

“You have not lied to men, but to God.” — Acts 5:4 (NASB)

Those words remind us that God is present among His people. He is not a distant observer. He lives in His church by His Spirit, and He cares about its truthfulness.

That should sober us. It should also comfort us.
