His name is Stephen, and within a few verses he stands accused before the council. The arrest of Stephen marks a turning point in Acts. Until now, the apostles have faced threats and a flogging. With Stephen, however, the opposition will become deadly.

Luke tells the story carefully because his readers needed to understand it. Many of them knew believers who had been slandered, dragged into court, or killed. Consequently, they asked difficult questions.

For example, why do faithful people suffer when they have done nothing wrong?

In addition, how should a Christian respond to lies?

And finally, does God stand with His servants when they are falsely accused?

Stephen’s arrest begins to answer these questions. It shows a man who served humbly, spoke wisely, and faced false charges with remarkable calm. Moreover, it shows that the disciple’s path often resembles his Lord’s.

Acts 6:8-15 NASB
And Stephen, full of grace and power, was performing great wonders and signs among the people. But some men from what was called the Synagogue of the Freedmen, including both Cyrenians and Alexandrians, and some from Cilicia and Asia, rose up and argued with Stephen. But they were unable to cope with his wisdom and the Spirit by whom he was speaking. Then they secretly induced men to say, “We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses and God.” And they stirred up the people, the elders, and the scribes, and they came up to him and dragged him away, and brought him before the Council. They put forward false witnesses who said, “This man does not stop speaking against this holy place and the Law; for we have heard him say that this Nazarene, Jesus, will destroy this place and change the customs which Moses handed down to us.” And all who were sitting in the Council stared at him, and they saw his face, which was like the face of an angel.

Key Focus of the Passage and Jesus’ Character

The focus is Stephen’s Spirit-filled character, the rise of slander against the church, the parallels between Stephen’s trial and Jesus’s trial, and the peace God gives His servants under attack.

Stephen’s accusers mention Jesus only with contempt. Nevertheless, His likeness appears throughout the scene. Therefore, the passage reveals Jesus as:

the Giver of grace and power to ordinary servants,

the Source of wisdom His opponents cannot resist,

the true Temple and the Fulfiller of the Law,

the Lord whose own trial sets the pattern for His people,

and the One whose glory shines on those who suffer for Him.

The People in the Interaction

Stephen

Members of the Synagogue of the Freedmen

Jews from Cyrene, Alexandria, Cilicia, and Asia

The men secretly persuaded to accuse him

The people, the elders, and the scribes

The false witnesses and the council

What Happened in the Scene

Stephen performs great wonders and signs among the people. Luke describes him as a man:

“…full of grace and power…”

However, opposition arises. Some members of the Synagogue of the Freedmen, along with Jews from Cyrene, Alexandria, Cilicia, and Asia, begin to argue with him. Yet they cannot stand against the wisdom and the Spirit with which he speaks.

So they change tactics. They secretly persuade men to claim that Stephen has spoken blasphemy against Moses and against God. Then they stir up the people, the elders, and the scribes. Together they seize Stephen and drag him before the council.

There, false witnesses testify. They say that Stephen never stops speaking against the temple and the Law. Furthermore, they claim he said that Jesus the Nazarene will destroy the temple and change the customs Moses handed down.

Finally, everyone in the council stares at Stephen. They see that his face looks like an angel’s.

From Serving Tables to Signs and Wonders

We first met Stephen a few verses ago. The congregation chose him to help distribute food to widows.

Luke described him then as a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit. Now we learn more. Stephen did not confine himself to the task he was given. He also performed great wonders and signs among the people.

This is significant. Until this point in Acts, only the apostles have worked miracles. Stephen is the first person outside the twelve whom Luke describes this way. Therefore, the power of the risen Christ did not belong to a small circle of leaders. It rested on a man whose official job was serving meals.

Notice also the order of events. Stephen accepted a humble assignment first. Then God expanded his usefulness. He did not wait for a prominent role before he served. Instead, he was faithful where the church placed him, and the Lord opened wider doors.

Full of Grace and Power

Luke sums up Stephen’s character in a phrase. He was full of grace and power.

Those two qualities do not often appear together. Powerful people are frequently harsh. Gracious people are sometimes weak. However, in Stephen the Spirit joined them.

His power showed in the signs he performed and in the arguments no one could answer. His grace will show most clearly at the end of his life, when he prays for the men who are killing him.

This combination reflects Jesus Himself. John wrote that the Word became flesh, full of grace and truth. The Lord spoke with an authority that astonished crowds. Yet children climbed into His arms, and sinners felt welcome at His table.

We need both qualities today. Truth without grace wounds people. Grace without strength fails them. Therefore, we should ask the Spirit to make us like Stephen: firm in conviction and gentle in spirit.

The Synagogue of the Freedmen

Opposition to Stephen came from a specific source.

Luke mentions the Synagogue of the Freedmen. Its members probably descended from Jews whom the Romans had once enslaved and later released. Alongside them stood Jews from Cyrene and Alexandria in North Africa, and from Cilicia and Asia in what is now Turkey.

In other words, these were Greek-speaking Jews from abroad. Stephen bore a Greek name, and he likely came from the same background. So his fiercest opponents were his own kind of people.

One detail deserves notice. Cilicia was the home province of a young Pharisee named Saul of Tarsus. Luke does not say that Saul took part in these debates. Nevertheless, Saul appears at Stephen’s death in the next chapter, so he may well have been present.

If so, the future apostle Paul first met the Gospel through a man he could not defeat in argument.

Wisdom They Could Not Resist

The debate did not go well for Stephen’s opponents.

Luke says they were unable to cope with the wisdom and the Spirit with which he was speaking.

Jesus had promised exactly this. He told His disciples that when adversaries opposed them, He would give them words and wisdom that no one could resist or refute. Here the promise comes true for a man who was not even an apostle.

Notice the two sources Luke names. Stephen spoke with wisdom, which means he knew the Scriptures and reasoned well. He also spoke by the Spirit, which means God empowered his words. Preparation and dependence worked together.

However, winning the argument did not win the opponents. They could not answer Stephen, yet they did not believe him. Once again, Acts shows us that unbelief is not finally an intellectual problem. A person can lose every argument and still refuse to bow.

The Arrest of Stephen: When Arguments Fail, Slander Begins

Since they could not defeat Stephen honestly, his opponents turned to dishonest means.

They secretly persuaded men to accuse him. These men claimed they had heard him speak blasphemy against Moses and against God.

This pattern is as old as sin. When people cannot refute the message, they attack the messenger. Truth gives way to tactics.

Then the opponents did something new in Acts. They stirred up the people. Until now, the ordinary people of Jerusalem have favored the believers. In fact, the rulers held back from punishing the apostles because they feared the crowd. Now, however, the accusation of blasphemy turns public opinion.

The charge was chosen with care. The apostles had been accused of defying the council. Stephen, by contrast, is accused of attacking Moses, the Law, and the temple. Those were the things every devout Jew held most sacred. Consequently, the people, the elders, and the scribes unite against him.

The Charges: The Temple and the Law

Before the council, false witnesses make two claims.

First, they say Stephen speaks constantly against the holy place and the Law. Second, they say he taught that Jesus the Nazarene would destroy the temple and change the customs of Moses.

Luke calls these witnesses false. Yet their testimony probably twisted something Stephen really said. The most effective lies usually contain a distorted truth.

What had Stephen likely taught? He had surely proclaimed that Jesus fulfills the Law and the temple. The sacrifices pointed to the Lamb of God. The temple pointed to the One in whom God dwells with His people. Jesus Himself had spoken of the temple of His body, and He had foretold that the building in Jerusalem would fall.

None of that insulted Moses. On the contrary, it honored what Moses wrote about. However, to men who treasured the building more than the God who gave it, such teaching sounded like an attack.

In the next chapter, Stephen will answer these charges at length.

Following in the Steps of Jesus

Anyone who has read the Gospels will recognize this scene.

Jesus, too, was arrested and brought before this council. False witnesses testified against Him as well. Moreover, they accused Him of the same thing. They said He threatened to destroy the temple. And He, too, was charged with blasphemy.

Luke draws the parallel on purpose. The servant is walking the road his Master walked.

Jesus told His disciples to expect this. ” A slave is not greater than his master,” He said. If they persecuted Him, they would also persecute His followers.

This truth can steady us. When we suffer unjustly for the sake of Christ, we have not wandered off the path. We are standing where He stood. Furthermore, the resemblance will continue. Stephen will die as Jesus died, with a prayer for his enemies and a prayer of trust.

The Face of an Angel

Luke closes the scene with a single image.

The members of the council fixed their eyes on Stephen. They saw that his face was:

“…like the face of an angel.”

Consider the moment. Liars have just testified against him. A hostile crowd has dragged him in. He faces the court that condemned Jesus. We would expect fear or anger on his face.

Instead, the council sees radiance and calm.

The detail carries a striking irony. Stephen stands accused of speaking against Moses. Yet Scripture tells us that when Moses came down from the mountain after speaking with God, his face shone. Now the face of the accused man shines too. In effect, God Himself bears witness to which side stands closer to Moses.

The detail also reveals Stephen’s heart. Peace like that does not come from circumstances. It comes from the presence of God. Stephen was full of the Spirit, and it showed.

The Wisdom of Jesus in the Formation of the Church

In this series, we keep asking what each passage reveals about the wisdom of Jesus in forming His church. The arrest of Stephen shows how He raises up and sustains His witnesses.

He develops servants through humble work. Stephen waits on tables before he stands before the council.

He gives His power beyond the apostles. As a result, the mission no longer depends on twelve men.

He keeps His promise to supply wisdom. Stephen’s opponents cannot answer him.

He allows His people to share His path. The servant’s trial mirrors the Master’s.

He bears witness to His own. When liars speak, He makes Stephen’s face shine.

He plants seeds we cannot see. Consequently, a young man from Cilicia may already be listening.

The Lesson for Us in 2026

1. Be Faithful in Small Assignments

Stephen served widows before he preached to rulers. Therefore, no task in the church is beneath us.

2. Pursue Both Grace and Power

Conviction and kindness belong together. We should not settle for one without the other.

3. Prepare, and Then Depend

Stephen spoke with wisdom and by the Spirit. Likewise, we should study the Word and lean on God.

4. Expect Truth to Be Twisted

Faithful words can be misquoted and turned against us. However, God knows what we actually said.

5. Do Not Answer Slander in Kind

Stephen did not lie about those who lied about him. Instead, he kept his integrity.

6. Let God’s Presence Show

Peace under pressure is a testimony no argument can match.

Final Reflection

Picture the council chamber once more.

It is the same room where Jesus stood. It is the same room where Peter and John stood, and then all twelve apostles. Now a different kind of man stands there. He is not an apostle. As far as we know, he never walked with Jesus in Galilee. A few weeks ago, the church asked him to make sure the widows were fed.

Yet every eye in the room is fixed on him.

An Ordinary Servant

Stephen’s story should encourage every believer who holds no title.

We sometimes imagine that God reserves His greatest work for a special class of Christians. However, Stephen breaks that assumption. He began as a helper. He took a practical job that freed others to preach. Then, as he served, the Spirit made him one of the most powerful witnesses in the early church.

No one planned that. The apostles did not appoint him as an evangelist. He simply did what was in front of him, full of faith and of the Holy Spirit, and God did the rest.

Therefore, do not measure your usefulness by your position. The Lord looks for people who are full of His Spirit, wherever they serve. He can make a kitchen, a classroom, or a workplace into a pulpit.

When Lies Are Told About You

Now consider what Stephen endured.

Men who could not answer him arranged for others to lie about him. They took his words and bent them. Then they turned the people against him. Few experiences hurt more than being misrepresented, especially by those who know better.

Perhaps you have tasted this. Someone has twisted what you said or questioned your motives, and you cannot correct the record.

If so, remember two things. First, Jesus understands. False witnesses stood up against Him in that same court. Second, God sees. Human courts can be deceived. However, the Judge of all the earth has never once been misled.

So we do not need to defend ourselves with the weapons used against us. We can speak the truth plainly and leave our reputation with Him.

A Face That Told the Truth

Finally, look at Stephen’s face.

“…like the face of an angel.” — Acts 6:15 (NASB)

The witnesses said one thing about him. His face said another. Before he spoke a single word in his defense, his calm answered the council’s question.

We cannot produce that kind of peace by effort. It is not a technique for looking serene. Rather, it flows from what fills us. Stephen had spent his days in the presence of God, and in the hour of trial that presence did not leave him.

What fills us in ordinary days will show on us in the day of pressure.
