Practice Spiritual Discernment: Walking in Wisdom and Truth

We live in a world overflowing with opinions, philosophies, and spiritual counterfeits. That is why the Bible repeatedly warns us to practice spiritual discernment. Discernment is the ability to distinguish truth from lies, wisdom from foolishness, and God’s voice from the enemy’s deception.

1 John 4:1 (NASB) tells us, “Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.” Practicing discernment keeps us from being led astray and empowers us to stand firm in the truth.

Why Spiritual Discernment Is Crucial

Discernment protects us from deception and strengthens our walk with Christ. Jesus warned in Matthew 24:24, “For false christs and false prophets will arise and will provide great signs and wonders, so as to mislead, if possible, even the elect” (NASB).

The enemy seeks to twist truth and lead believers into compromise. To practice spiritual discernment is to remain vigilant, grounded in God’s Word, and dependent on the Spirit.

The Role of the Word and the Spirit

Discernment is rooted in both Scripture and the Holy Spirit. Hebrews 5:14 says, “But solid food is for the mature, who because of practice have their senses trained to distinguish between good and evil” (NASB).

  • God’s Word anchors discernment. Psalm 119:130 declares, “The unfolding of Your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple” (NASB).
  • The Holy Spirit leads discernment. John 16:13 promises, “But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth” (NASB).

Together, the Word and Spirit equip us to test what we hear, see, and experience.

How to Practice Spiritual Discernment

Developing discernment requires intentional choices. Here are practical ways to live with wisdom:

1. Test Everything by Scripture

Acts 17:11 praises the Bereans because “they received the word with great eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see whether these things were so” (NASB). Always weigh teaching, advice, and experiences against the Bible.

2. Pray for Wisdom

James 1:5 encourages us, “But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him” (NASB). Prayer opens our hearts to God’s guidance.

3. Stay Alert to the Enemy’s Schemes

Ephesians 6:11 warns, “Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil” (NASB). Discernment requires recognizing when the enemy is at work.

4. Seek Godly Counsel

Proverbs 15:22 says, “Without consultation, plans are frustrated, but with many counselors they succeed” (NASB). Surround yourself with mature believers who can help you discern wisely.

5. Look for the Fruit

Jesus said in Matthew 7:16, “You will know them by their fruits. Grapes are not gathered from thorn bushes, nor figs from thistles, are they?” (NASB). True teaching and genuine faith produce righteous fruit.

The Results of Spiritual Discernment

When you practice spiritual discernment, you will:

  • Stand firm against deception (Ephesians 4:14)
  • Walk in clarity and wisdom (Proverbs 3:5–6)
  • Experience deeper intimacy with God (John 10:27)
  • Live with spiritual maturity (Hebrews 5:14)

Final Encouragement

Discernment is not about suspicion—it is about wisdom. God calls His people to be alert, anchored in truth, and led by the Spirit. In a world clouded with lies, choose to practice spiritual discernment, holding fast to God’s Word and walking daily in His light.

Prayer

Lord, give me wisdom and discernment in every area of my life. Help me test everything against Your Word and follow the leading of the Holy Spirit. Protect me from deception, strengthen my faith, and let my life be guided by truth. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
